Literature: thoughts on Freedom
I think that everyone is meant to be free, even African Americans. Back then people didn't really care until they realized that all men are created equal. It is dissapointing to me to know that some of the greatest Americans, such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson believed in slavery. The word Nigger isn't a very respectful name for a Black person. Blacks were looked down upon for the longest time. Now people know that all men are created equal.
Luke,
ReplyDeleteGreat job thinking about the ugly parts of our history and culture in the US. That word nigger is just one of the uncomfortable things we have to think about and talk about in Huck Finn. It forces us to examine not only our history, but also our current culture and personal attitudes. It sometimes hard to talk about those things, Luke, so thanks for breaking the ice. I want to challenge you on one idea, though - the idea that all men are created equal. Was there ever a time when no one believed that all men were created equal? Is that time completely behind us - in other words does everyone now believe that all are created equal? I hope that we can talk about it more as a group throughout the year.
